The Fort McHenry Channel is fully cleared, and the Port of Baltimore has officially reopened for business.
Salvage crews in Baltimore have successfully removed the final large steel truss segment of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. The channel is now restored to its original operational dimensions of 700 feet wide and 50 feet deep.
Local officials expect commercial shipping traffic through the Port of Baltimore to return to normal levels in June ’24. Routine maintenance of the channel will ensure future dredging operations will not be impacted.
Fort McHenry Limited Access Channel in Baltimore is now open for commercial vessels up to 48 feet, operating daily from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The channel maintains a depth of 48 feet, with 350-foot horizontal and 214-foot vertical clearances due to nearby BG&E powerlines.
As salvage operations progress, there may be opportunities for increased depth and width, subject to survey analyses. However, vessel transits are at the discretion of the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP), considering weather conditions and ongoing salvage efforts.
Fort Carroll Temporary Access Channel, as well as Sollers Point and Hawkins Point Temporary Alternate Channels, are also available for commercial vessel traffic with specific specifications.
